The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday arrested Central Council of Homeopathy chief Dr Ramjee Singh (pictured above) and one more person on corruption charges, the Hindustan Times reported. The two allegedly accepted Rs 20 lakh as a bribe to give a favourable inspection report for the setting up of a homeopathy college in the city of Rajkot in Gujarat.
The CBI alleged that Singh and Harishankar Jha were approached by middlemen on behalf of RK University in Rajkot, according to the report. An agency official told the daily that three members of a “favourable inspection team” – also named as accused in the case – allegedly collected money when they were sent to the institution on September 16. Jha was arrested after he collected a separate amount of money for the final approval, according to the official.
The CBI also conducted raids in Delhi, Gurgaon, Gandhinagar, Jabalpur, Kolkata and Rajkot after arresting Jha and Singh. The agency is investigating the possibility of Jha having accepted bribes for the purpose of granting regulatory approvals to other homeopathy colleges as well.
All such colleges in the country have to be approved by the Central Council, which gives its nod after going through the inspection report. Singh was elected the chief of the body in 2009, according to NDTV. He has previously served as the president and secretary of the Homeopathic Association of India.
