Angelique Kerber, after usurping Serena Williams as the dominant force of women's tennis, won the Women's Tennis Association 2016 Player of the Year award on Friday.
The 28-year-old German won the Australian Open and the US Open whilst also reaching the Wimbledon finals during the year. Kerber also clinched the silver medal in the Rio Olympics.
Kerber's crowing moment of the season would probably go down as her win in the Australian Open this year, where she humbled Williams in the final. However, the legendary American turned the tables on her in the Wimbledon final, defeating Kerber in straight sets.
Kerber's final Grand Slam win of the year came at Flushing Meadows, where she defeated Karolina Pliskova in a hard-fought three-setter, and finished the year as the top ranked women's singles player.
