Radio silence followed for a year and a half after Nintendo announced its plans to launch a shiny new console. The company is finally offering some solace to gaming enthusiasts with the help of a special three-minute preview, introducing the world to “Nintendo Switch”.
First, this new device isn't your traditional gaming console like the XBox or PlayStation. It's meant for both – playing from the comfort of your home at a TV and also, like a tablet, in your hands while you're on the move. It’s a bit of a treat to watch the players convert it into a portable device, simply by removing the controllers and attaching them to the display.
The preview shows gamers making easy transitions from their living rooms to the outdoors, carrying the game with them wherever they choose to go. The kickstand lets you relax, you don’t need to hold on to it. And the icing on the cake? There’s a split screen allowing multiple players to play games at the same time.
Most importantly, there’s hardly any inconvenience if you decide to switch to portable. The game will begin right from where you paused, you simply need to grab the console and get going.
“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America, was quoted as saying. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”
Switch is the latest entrant in the gaming world to take players beyond their computers, allowing them to experiment with their environment and gaming conditions. This follows the insanely popular augmented reality game, Pokémon Go that was released earlier this year and has managed to get both fans and the general public hooked. Don’t forget to trace everything back to the good old Gameboy from 1989, Nintendo’s early attempt at letting players experience a whole new reality with their handheld devices.
The latest trailer follows several characters as they take their consoles to airports and flights, their homes, the backseat of cars, basketball courts, gaming tournaments, and other incredible settings.
It also showcases several games which may be confirmed very soon. A few names in the offing include a brand new Zelda game, Splatoon, Mario Kart and more. March 2017 is the date enthusiasts must mark on their calendars as the company promises to start shipping the consoles by then.
