Patchy Premier League form aside, English champions Leicester City took another giant step towards qualification for the Round of 16 when they defeated FC Kobenhavn 1-0 on matchday three of the UEFA Champions League.

They might have taken only 8 points from as many league matches, but Leicester have won all three of their group stage matches in the Champions League and a win in the return fixture in Copenhagen could seal progress to the next matchday.

Schmeichel pulls off match-winning save

A solitary goal was enough to give Leicester a commanding lead at the top of Group G at the half-way point of the Champions League group stages. A Jamie Vardy cross was headed back in by summer signing Islam Slimani only for Riyad Mahrez to sidefoot it in with his left boot.

Slimani should have doubled the home side's lead in the second half but the Algerian's strikers goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Kasper Schmeichel, who had practically nothing to do all night had the last say as Andreas Cornelius' toe-poke was superbly saved by the Danish keeper to ensure Leicester went home with the three points. This was Kobenhavn's first defeat in 24 matches.

Weigl's first senior goal gives Dortmund the win

Borussia Dortmund came away from Portugal with a hard-fought win over Sporting Lisbon and snapped the home team's nine-game winning streak at the Jose Alvalade.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the visitors an early lead when the Gabon striker ran down the right wing and then chipped the ball over the on-rushing Rui Patricio.

Julian Weigl, who sidestepped a Sporting midfielder before driving home from long distance, scored what turned out to be the eventual winner. It was also the 21-year old midfielder's first goal in senior competition.

Marc Bartra was adjudged to have passed the ball back to keeper Roman Buerki and Sporting were given a free-kick inside the area. Bruno Cesar made no mistake, lashing the ball home but it turned out to be no more than a consolation.

Real put five past Legia

On a day of close matches, Real Madrid scored five in an easy victory over Legia Warsaw at the Santiago Bernabeu. Gareth Bale scored the opener via a solo run and an emphatic finish from the left wing.

Madrid soon doubled their lead when Marcelo's shot took a wicked deflection, ending up in the back of the net. Legia pulled one back when Miroslav Radovic had been brought down by Danilo in the box; Radovic himself slotting the resulting penalty away.

Marco Asensio then helped himself to a goal on his Champions League debut as Cristiano Ronaldo teed up the ball for the youngster to sweep in with his left foot.

Two substitutes combined after the break when Alvaro Morata crossed the ball in to Lucas Vazquez who made no mistake with his finish. Morata then turned scorer as Ronaldo's second assist of the evening was driven home at the near post.
