Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan on Tuesday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that even he possessed many of the qualities that the prime minister had. The senior leader said, “I can make tea, play drums, cook food and I wear proper clothes. Besides, I am not all that bad looking [and nor] am I corrupt.” Khan made the statement at a function organised to distribute e-rickshaws in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, PTI reported.
Khan further criticised Modi for not fulfilling his poll promise of returning black money deposited abroad. “If I become prime minister, I assure you, I will deposit Rs 20 lakh in [the bank] accounts of 130 crore people within six months. I am not like those who don’t keep their promises.” He also attacked the prime minister over his Pakistan policy and said Modi would take advantage of the tension between the two countries during campaign for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Khan has been in the headlines for several contentious statements. In August, the 15-year-old girl who was gangraped in Bulandshahr on July 29 approached the Supreme Court seeking a First Information Report against Khan for calling the incident a political conspiracy. On September 21, he said that while he had all the makings of a prime minister, his Muslim identity could be a “shortcoming”.
