A 72-year-old Right To Information activist, Bhupendra Vira, was shot dead in his Mumbai home on Sunday night, allegedly over a property dispute, PTI reported. Vira campaigned against illegal encroachments and the powerful land mafia in the city. His wife said she was at home when the incident occurred but that she did not hear a gunshot, The Times of India reported. Former corporator Razzaq Khan and his son Amjad have been arrested in connection with the murder, The Free Press Journal reported.
According to The Indian Express, Vira's applications had brought the former corporator's alleged links to illegal constructions under the government's scanner. Khan reportedly received a demolition order for four of his properties after the activist filed a complaint. The authorities are also investigating the involvement of six other people in his death.
Social activist and former Aam Aadmi Party leader Anjali Damania said Vira and other members of an advanced locality management body had received threats from the lobby they were fighting against. Former information commissioner Shailesh Gandhi has called on State Chief Information Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad to order the release of information sought by Vira, The Indian Express reported. Gandhi also urged for protection for the deceased's family and asked for a quick investigation.
