A student of New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University has gone missing after rowing with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the city police said on Sunday. Najeeb Ahmad, who is also a member of the All India Students' Association, got involved in the altercation when members of the rival organisation were campaigning in the mess committee elections. The Indian Express reported.
A case of kidnapping and wrongful confinement has been registered at the Vasant Kunj police station. However, police said various students have given conflicting accounts of the events. The ABVP claimed Ahmad had slapped one of their campaigners without provocation simply because he was “wearing a red thread on his wrist”. However, student leader Anirban Bhattacharya said “a group of Sanghi goons” had beaten Ahmad up.
The ABVP had filed a separate case against Ahmad, while students supporting him organised at JNU to demand police intervention in the matter. Ahmad is pursuing his MSc in biotechnology.
