Police arrested Aam Aadmi Party MLA Gulab Singh after he surrendered at Umra in Surat, Gujarat, in connection with an alleged extortion case on Sunday. A non-bailable warrant was issued against the Matiala legislator on Friday for not co-operating in the investigation. Singh’s driver and an associate were also arrested in connection with the same case last month.
On September 13, property dealers Deepak Sharma and Rinku Diwan had filed a case under Section 384 (punishment for extortion), alleging Singh’s associates Satish, Divender and Jagdish of extorting Rs 2 lakh from them. They had allegedly demanded Rs 1.5 lakh more after the initial Rs 2 lakh. Gulab Singh’s name cropped up after the complainants alleged that the extortionists used a vehicle belonging to Singh, reported The Indian Express.
The arrest comes while party chief Arvind Kejriwal is in Surat to address a rally. Kejriwal, however, had questioned the timing of the arrest. The Delhi chief minister tweeted, “Just 2 days before Surat rally, Del police obtains Non-bailable warrant against our Guj prabhari, Gulab Singh in a completely false case. Will Gulab be arrested before the rally?”
