An inspector with the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police was suspended on Thursday after he was tricked into passing information to a Pakistani spy whom he believed was an Army officer. Inspector Tanveer Ahmad gave a Pakistani intelligence officer details about the deployment of security forces all over Kashmir, in particular in the Kupwara and Baramulla districts, The Indian Express reported.
Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Rajendra Kumar said an investigation has been ordered and that it appeared to be a case of negligence, The Times of India reported. Ahmad had passed on the information over the phone, without actually meeting the officer, who called himself “Major Sanjeev”. The Ministry of Home Affairs traced the call and ordered action against Ahmad.
The officer’s suspension comes as unrest continues all over Kashmir since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8. The violence has been exacerbated by cross-border strikes by militants. An attack in Uri on September 18 left 19 soldiers dead and spurred tensions between India and Pakistan.
