A local village court in West Bengal's Murshidabad ordered that a woman's hair be chopped off as punishment for her allegedly having an extra-marital affair, ANI reported on Thursday. She had fled the village with a man, but the duo was forcibly made to return and face trial before the local chief.
The unofficial court, set up in Chandpur village, initially asked the 32-year-old woman to pay Rs 6,000 as a penalty for the alleged affair. When she failed to pay the amount, some villagers barged into her house on Sunday night and cut her hair, ANI reported. Local village courts, also called kangaroo courts, are illegal.
The woman filed a complaint at the Nowda police station against seven people, three of whom have been arrested for setting up the illegal body.
