Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited on Sunday claimed it had made a world record by registering more than 1.6 crore users in its one month of operation. It said in a statement that Jio had achieved the mark faster than any other telecom operator or popular app worldwide, including WhatsApp, Facebook and Skype, PTI reported.
Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd Mukesh Ambani said, "Jio is built to empower every Indian with the power of data. We are delighted that people have recognised this and are utilising our services to the fullest." Ambani had earlier said that with Jio – a subsidiary of RIL – they aim to hit the 10-crore subscriber mark "in the shortest possible time and create a new world record".
Reliance Jio was launched on September 1, while its commercial launch was on September 5. Its offers, such as free voice calls to all Jio users and 1GB of 4G data at Rs 50, had triggered a battle of the best tariff among telecom operators in India. However, it drew criticism soon after its launch with an abysmal call drop rate, which it blamed other service providers for not providing adequate interconnection points.
