A minor has succumbed to pellet injuries sustained during protests in Kashmir. Junaid Ahmad was injured when security personnel fired tear gas shells and pump action guns to disperse protestors in Srinagar’s Saidpora area on Friday night. While the boy’s family said he was 11 years old, the police held that he was 13, reported Hindustan Times.
A police official told NDTV: "He [Ahmad] was standing at the main gate of his home in the Saidpora area in downtown area of city when he was hit by a volley of pellets," The local administration has imposed curfew in the city to avoid further protests and violence. The police had imposed a curfew in the area on Friday after separatist leaders called for a protest march to the United Nations office. Separatist Hurriyat Conference has urged the United Nations to intervene on the Kashmir issue.
The Valley has been under restrictions since the death of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani on July 8. Several people have been killed and hundreds have sustained grievous injuries during protests in the past three months. The killing also led India's relations with Pakistan to worsen, with the neighbouring country declaring Wani a martyr and calling for plebiscites in Kashmir. Schools, colleges and business establishments remained shut in the region for the 92nd day on Saturday.
