Militants attacked a security post in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday leaving at least one police officer dead, and another officer and a civilians injured, ANI reported. According to Great Kashmir, the police were trying to foil a rifle-snatching bid when the shootout began in the district’s Reshnagri locality.
An official told PTI that militants fired at the police guard posted at minority picket Jamnagri in Herpora area of Shopian at around 8:30 pm. He added that the militants fled after the police personnel retaliated. Constable Nazeer Ahmad was killed in the exchange, while constable Zahoor Ahmad and a civilian were left injured.
The post had been set up to guard a minority community in the area, officers told The Times of India. The officer killed was identified as Nazeer Ahmad. The two injured have been shifted to hospital.
