At least nine people were reported dead in Maharashtra's Marathwada region as the retreating monsoon triggered flash floods in the state, PTI reported on Monday. Officials of the Marathwada Divisional Commissionerate said four unidentified people were killed by lightning in the districts of Jalna and Nanded, while five others drowned in flash floods in Beed and Latur on Sunday.
District Collector of Beed Navalkishor Ram said, "It is a rare phenomenon. We sought the help of National Disaster Response Force for evacuation and rescue operations." The Marathwada region is usually plagued by extreme drought.
Overflowing water from the rivers that flow in Marathwada, including Bindusara and Manjara, have ruined crops in the vicinity. Officials estimated a loss of more than 5-7 lakh hectares. The meteorological department has predicted more showers for the state as a depression is developing over Telangana.
