The United States of America triumphed 17-11 over Europe on Sunday at Hazeltine in Minnesota to win the prestigious Ryder Cup, the first time they have won the title since 2008.

Europe were trailing 6½-9½ after the first two days but mounted a strong comeback in the final-day singles. However, the United States turned it around when Patrick Reed defeated Rory Mcllroy in an epic encounter. On the 18th green, Ryan Moore beat Lee Westwood to get the decisive point and end US' long wait for the title.

It was the perfect result for United States after they had garnered criticism for their loss in 2014, which led to the establishment of a taskforce. The Europe team were foiled in their bid for an unprecedented fourth successive title.

"We haven’t had a good run lately and I’m thrilled for them that they got the win,” said US captain Davis Love III to Reuters. “Proud of the way they competed all week. I’m proud of their attitude. But mostly proud of the way they came together as a family.”
