The United Nations released a postage stamp to honour Carnatic music legend MS Subbulakshmi on Sunday. The commemorative stamp, worth $1.20 (Rs 79 approximately), was released at a special ceremony in New York to mark India’s ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change, reported PTI.
The stamp has the iconic blue emblem of the UN alongside her picture. The first stamp was presented to Carnatic music singer Sudha Raghunathan who performed at the ceremony.
Subbulakshmi, whose birth centenary is this year, had performed at the UN General Assembly, the first Indian to do so, in October 1966. She was also the first musician to receive the coveted Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
The UN also observed Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary as the International Day of Non-violence. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “Every year on the International Day of Non-Violence, we re-commit ourselves to the cause of peace, as exemplified by the life of Mahatma Gandhi who was born on this day 147 years ago.” October 2 was designated the International Day of Non-Violence in 2007.
