A Border Security Force officer was killed and another injured when militants attacked Rashtriya Rifles and BSF camps outside Kashmir’s Baramulla town, about 50 km from Srinagar, on Sunday night, reported PTI. Two militants were also killed in the exchange of fire.
Both the jawans were from the 40th Battalion of the BSF. The militants, who are suspected to have entered India across the Jhelum river, opened fire and hurled grenades after they gained access to the 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp through an adjoining BSF camp. The firing, which started around 10.30 pm on Sunday, continued for two hours, reported NDTV. Around midnight, the Northern Command of the Indian Army tweeted that the situation was under control.
It is not yet clear how many militants were there. The area was cordoned off and a search operation was launched soon after the attack began. The Baramulla highway leading to Handwara has been sealed, reported NDTV. Later, senior BSF officials reached the spot of the attack and Director-General KK Sharma briefed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the incident.
The BSF said there was also a suspected infiltration at the Chakri post in Punjab's Gurdaspur sector early on Monday morning.
The attack comes four days after India carried out surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control. On September 18, four militants had launched a similar attack on the army base camp in Uri and killed 19 soldiers.
