After India extended their first innings score to 316, New Zealand were stunned early on with Mohammed Shami dismissing Tom Latham for just 1 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar destroying Martin Guptill's stumps when the batsman was on 13.
Struggling at 21/2 at lunch, captain Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls needed to build a partnership to stand a chance against a threatening Indian bowling attack. However, after lunch, Nicholls was dismissed by Kumar as New Zealand slumped to 23/3.
Ross Taylor and Luke Ronchi built a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket on a pitch that saw the ball bounce and assist the bowlers. However, Ronchi fell to Ravindra Jadeja on 35 just before rain played spoilsport. Captain Taylor is still batting out there and all Kiwi hopes will rest on their skipper.
Brief scores:
New Zealand 85/4 (Ross Taylor 30 not out; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/20) trail India 316 by 231 runs
