A special team of the Kolkata Police on Thursday night arrested Kader Khan, the prime accused in the 2012 Park Street gangrape case, from a hideout in Delhi. Khan’s aide Ali was also caught during the raid. The two will be produced before a local court, and the police will seek transit remand so that he can be taken to Kolkata, reported dna.
Kader Khan and another accused in the case had been missing since the incident took place on February 6, 2012. However, in December last year, a sessions court in Kolkata convicted Sumit Bajaj, Ruman Khan and Naseer Khan of gangraping Suzette Jordan and sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. It also issued them fines of Rs 1 lakh each, saying that the convicts would have to undergo a further imprisonment of six months if they were not paid.
Five men raped Jordan at gunpoint in a moving car on February 6, 2012. She was thrown out of the car on Park Street. Jordan later became an activist for women’s rights after she did not receive adequate support when she decided to go public about her assault. She died in March 2015 after a brief illness.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had been criticised for accusing Jordan of faking the incident. Banerjee also faced flak after IPS Damayanti Sen, the joint commissioner of police who had been investigating the case, was transferred.
