At least three people were killed and more than 100 injured after a train derailed and crashed through a station in the United States city of New Jersey on Thursday, The New York Times reported. Reports said the train crashed through the concourse at the a station in Hoboken.
A spokesperson for the New Jersey Transit system confirmed the incident but did not give any further details. Another official said there was a “significant number of injuries”, adding that there were also “structural concerns about the facility”. The transport service later said that train travel at the station would be suspended because of the crash.
Pictures posted on social media showed reportedly showed a section of the facility’s roof having collapsed. “I saw a woman pinned under concrete,” said Bhagyesh Shah, a passenger on the train. “A lot of people were bleeding; one guy was crying,” he said, according to NBC New York. Many people were also feared trapped in the wreckage, according to BBC.
Preliminary reports suggested that the crash was either accidental or had been caused by an operator error, according to NBC New York. A nearby medical centre said it had sent several trauma and emergency units to assist first responders at the scene. Hoboken is New Jersey Transit’s fifth-busiest station and is the final stop for many train lines, as well as a transfer point for those travelling to New York City. More than 15,000 people board trains from the station everyday.
