Authorities on Wednesday imposed curfew in the Koimoh town of south Kashmir's Kulgam district after separatist groups announced a march to the tehsil headquarter, reported PTI. A police officer said it was a precautionary measure to maintain law and order situation and avoid any untoward incident.
Although there is no curfew in other parts of Kashmir, restrictions on the assembly of people under Section 144 are in place. Normal life continues to be affected. Shops, petrol pumps and other business establishments are shut. So are schools, colleges and other educational institutions. However, according to PTI, there has been an increase in the number of public vehicles on road.
Meanwhile the toll in the ongoing crisis rose to 82, including two police officers, on Tuesday when a woman was killed after protestors hurled stones at an SUV. The police said the car hit the two sisters as it was reversing to avoid the attack.
The unrest in the Kashmir Valley entered its 82nd day on Wednesday since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani on July 8. Wani's death in an encounter triggered statewide protests, while the government's handling of the law-and-order situation drew criticism. The killing also led India's relations with Pakistan to worsen, with the neighbouring country declaring Wani a martyr and calling for plebiscites in Kashmir.
