The biggest game of the night lived up to its billing as Real Madrid threw away the lead not once, but twice as Borussia Dortmund came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with the Champions League holders at the Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund extended their unbeaten run at home to Real to four matches as Cristiano Ronaldo scored one goal and was heavily involved in the other following a mid-week tantrum in which he was substituted following Madrid's 2-2 draw with Las Palmas.
Six of the evening's eight games produced decisive results as Tottenham bagged their first win of their Champions League campaign after losing their first game to Monaco. Juventus had it easy in Croatia as Paulo Dybala netted a screamer in their 4-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb.
Dortmund's youngsters shine in cameos
Substitute Andre Schurrle, barely able to move and hobbling on his return from injury, scored with his left foot five minutes from time to give Dortmund a share of the spoils against Real Madrid, who drew their third game in a row to pile up the pressure on manager Zinedine Zidane.
The visitors started strongly and took the lead through Ronaldo, who finished off a flowing counter after Gareth Bale had backheeled the ball onto his path. Dortmund equalised through a tap-in by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, after Real keeper Keylor Navas could only parry a free-kick by young Portuguese left-back Raphael Guerreiro into Raphael Varane's head which then cannoned off the post and into the path of the Gabon striker's path.
Ronaldo curled a short corner into the path of Karim Benzema whose header came off the crossbar as Raphael Varane tapped the ball into an open goal to give the visitors the lead again. Guerreiro and the 19-year old Ousmane Dembele, very impressive on the night, were replaced by Christian Pulisic, 18, and Emre Mor, 19, as Thomas Tuchel as the home team pressed for an equaliser.
The substitutes had a definite impact on the game with some neat build-up play as Dortmund peppered Madrid's goal forcing Navas into a string of saves. It was Pulisic's cross which found Schurrle, who rifled it home, as Zidane ponders over his side's leaky defence.
Leicester City win putting poor league form behind
Leicester City continued to enjoy their first tryst with the Champions League as they clinched their second consecutive win, holding off Portuguese giants FC Porto with a dominant display at the King Power stadium. Despite the scoreline reading 1-0, the reigning English champions created enough chances to win by a much bigger scoreline.
Porto striker Andre Silva had the first real chance of the game as he ran through the Leicester defense but failed to put the ball in the net after chipping goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Leicester, smarting from that chance, constantly bombarded the face of Iker Casillas' goal. After 25 minutes, the Foxes went into the lead as Riyad Mahrez's precise cross was nodded into the net by Algerian teammate Islam Slimani.
Leicester were a constant threat with their attacks and Mahrez almost doubled the lead with a thumping shot from outside the box, forcing Casillas to take rearguard action. Porto threatened in the last 10 minutes of the game but Leicester held on to make it two wins out of two.
Tottenham's favourite Son?
Son Heung-Min can do no wrong at the moment as the South Korean winger's fifth goal in as many matches for Tottenham Hotspurs gave them an invaluable three points away in Russia.
Spurs started the game with no points on the board after a poor display at Wembley in their first Champions League group stage match against Monaco. There were very few chances created by either team as Vincent Jannsen continued to deputise for the injured Harry Kane in front of goal.
Both teams combined had a paltry five shots on target all night as a Dele Alli drive from 25 yards hit the crossbar on its way out. Son grabbed the only goal of the game to continue his resurgence, as Erik Lamela directed his ball behind the CSKA Moscow defence and the South Korean's shot just managed to squeeze under the onrushing Igor Akinfeev's outstretched arm and roll into the goal.
With this, Akinfeev has failed to keep a clean sheet in his last 39 Champions League matches. Group E is now wide open as Monaco, who grabbed a last gasp equaliser against Bayer Leverkusen, lead the group with four points, one ahead of Spurs, who lie in second. Leverkusen have two points courtesy of their two draws as CSKA bring up the rear with a solitary point.
Italian champions thump hapless Zagreb
Juventus put an imperious display at Stadion Maksimir, slamming four goals past Dynamo Zagreb. The dominant Juventus slipped into the lead after Miralem Pjanic expertly took down a Leonardo Bonnuci long ball and slotted the ball home through a deflection.
Gonzalo Higuain doubled the lead with a neat touch with his right and a clinical finish. Paulo Dybala scored the best goal of the night with a thumping drive from 30 yards out. Juventus controlled possession and completed a rout with a Dani Alves free-kick minutes from time, which also took a deflection before beating Adrian Semper's despairing dive at goal.
