The Centre on Tuesday approved the Haryana government’s proposal to officially change Gurgaon’s name to Gurugram, PTI reported. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the development and said the city and the district will now be called Gurugram.
Gurugram is popularly believed to have been the village where Dronacharya, a guru from the Indian epic Mahabharata, lived. According to beliefs, he was gifted the village as 'gurudakshina' or payment from the Pandavas, who were his pupils. Historians, however, say there is no proof, textual or otherwise, of Gurgaon having been where Dronacharya lived.
