At least 17 people were killed and 50 more were injured in three separate blasts in Shia-dominated districts of Baghdad on Tuesday, Reuters reported. Police officials said two suicide bombers detonated their explosives in the al-Jadida and Baiyaa districts, while a roadside bomb exploded near a gathering of cattle herders and merchants in the al-Radhwaniya area of Iraq’s capital city.
While the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for two of the attacks, it was unclear as to who carried out the third blast. The bombings come just two days after another Islamic State suicide attack in West Baghdad killed seven people and wounded another 28.
The militant group, which controls sections of northern and western Iraq, has increased its offensive in state-controlled regions of the country in retaliation to losing territories to the United States-backed Iraqi forces and Iran-backed Shi’ite militias.
