Technology major Google launched public Wi-Fi platform Google Station in India on Tuesday, its 18th anniversary, as part of its efforts to expand its internet partnerships in the country, The Economic Times reported. The company announced a number of other initiatives, including YouTube Go, which promises increased speed and data efficiency for offline video viewing and sharing. Google currently has a deal with RailTel to provide Wi-Fi at various railways stations in India.
Caeser Sengupta, vice-president for Google's Next Billion Users, said, "We asked ourselves, why stop at railway stations. What if we could bring connectivity to more people? By getting Wi-Fi into more malls, bus stops, city centers, cafes, million more will be able to learn and find information they need, not just in India but anywhere," Medianama reported.
According to the website, Google is live in 52 railway stations, with more than 3.5 million RailWire Wi-Fi users every month. Mumbai Central became the first Indian railway station to offer internet services as part of Google's campaign to provide Wi-Fi at 400 railway stations in the country.
