Right activist Irom Sharmila on Monday met Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and sought his advice on how to defeat “major political parties” in her state Manipur, PTI reported. Sharmila broke her 16-year fast on August 9, and announced her decision to contest the state Assembly elections in 2017.
The Delhi Chief Minister is believed to have assured Sharmila of all possible support from his party for her future political plans. “In the meeting, she sought the Chief Minister’s advice on defeating major political parties in Manipur which is scheduled to go for polls next year,” an official said, according to the news agency.
Sharmila spoke to Kejriwal for around 45 minutes at the Delhi Secretariat. Besides Kejriwal, she also met Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. However, she has not yet made a statement about Monday’s discussions, which reportedly also included other issues related to the northeastern state.
Sharmila was on a hunger strike since 2000 in protest against the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act in the state, which is an Act enforced to bring under control areas that the government considered "disturbed". Sharmila was criticised by a few groups for ending her fast and for her decision to enter politics. An insurgent group in the region had even threatened her and asked her not to end her fast.
