Even after incurring losses this year, Sun Pharma's Dilip Shanghvi retained his second position with a net worth of $16.9 billion (Rs 1.13 lakh crore) while the Hinduja Family edged passed Azim Premji of Wipro to take the third spot. Forbes pegged the Hindujas' net worth at $15.2 billion (Rs 1.01 lakh crore) while of that Premji stood at $15 billion (Rs 1 lakh crore). The fifth position was held by construction magnate Pallonji Mistry and steel baron Lakshmi Mittal was sixth.
The combined net worth of all the 100 people was pegged at $381 billion, a nearly 10% increase from $345 billion last year. India Editor of Forbes Asia Naazneen Karmali said, “In a post-Brexit world, India appears a steady ship with an economy growing at 7%-plus. The majority of India’s 100 richest have notched up handsome gains as their companies have outperformed the stock market in the past year."
Cement industrialist Benu Gopal Bangur broke into the top 20 by taking the 14th position. Others on the list include Asian Paints non-executive Vice Chairperson Ashwin Dani (34th), and Biocon head Kiran Mazumdar Shaw (65th). As many as 13 people who were on the list last year failed to make it back this time, including Flipkart co-founders Sachin and Binny Bansal.
