One militant was shot dead in an encounter in North Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district on Thursday. The exchange of fire in Aragam village began after security forces cordoned off a house located in the forests, an Army officer told Greater Kashmir. A few militants are believed to be holed up in the house, the officer said, adding that the encounter was still underway.
Security forces had received intelligence inputs on the militants hiding in the area. The gunfight comes three days after the attack on the Indian Army base in Uri, in which 18 soldiers were killed, and two days after militants struck a police post in Kashmir's Handwara district. There was a three-day shootout between law enforcement agencies and militants in Poonch last week, where all four militants were killed.
