Jagdish Gagneja, vice president of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's Punjab wing, died on Thursday. He was attacked in Jalandhar late on August 6 and had sustained serious bullet wounds. A day after he was shot, the brigadier (retired) was taken to Ludhiana's Hero DMC Heart Institute hospital, which is where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning, PTI reported.

According to doctors, his condition had worsened on Wednesday night when his blood pressure fell and spine ruptured. An autopsy will be conducted at DMC hospital, instead of a civil hospital, for security reasons. He will be cremated at 4 pm at Ram Bagh in Jalandhar, said Hindustan Times.

Gagneja had been on life support since two bike-borne assailants had shot at him at close range in August. The case was handed over the Central Bureau of Investigation after the Punjab Police failed to make any headway in their inquiry. They had also announced a job and Rs 10 lakh as a reward to anyone who could provide information on the attackers.

In addition to his family, a number of senior RSS and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and Commissioner of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh were at the hospital to pay their respects.
