While one of the autorickshaw drivers, Arumugam, died at the scene of the accident, many other drivers were injured. The accident took place around 3.30 am when the auto drivers were sleeping inside their vehicles, which were parked on the arterial road in Chennai, which is close to both Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's home and Opposition leader Karunanidhi's residences. Police told The Times of India that Vijayanand and his friend Charan Kumar were returning home after a party thrown by the Tuti Patriots team that won the recent Tamil Nadu Premier League.
The car's airbags helped the duo to escape unhurt. However, Sundar, one of the injured drivers, told NDTV, "An ambulance came for us only after 20 minutes." According to reports, Charan Kumar managed to flee the scene of crime and has not been arrested yet. A police officer told NDTV, "The student, Vikas Vijayanand, was drunk while driving. We are investigating."
