David Ferrer defeated Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth and last rubber of the Davis Cup World Group Play-off between Spain and India in New Delhi on Sunday. With Ferrer's win, Spain has a comprehensive 5-0 whitewash over India in the tie.
Ramanathan's booming returns and volleys hit Ferrer initially but the Spaniard was the overwhelming favourite coming into the game. Ferrer then took a healthy lead in the first set, which set the tone for the match.
Ferrer's lightning-quick serves lent him plenty of points but Ramanathan fought till the end, even shading the advantage at match point. However, the World No. 13 held on to take the game in straight sets and put Spain back in the World Group after a gap of two years.
