India's Ramkumar Ramanathan put up a fight but Spain's David Ferrer held on to win 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets to take the fifth rubber in New Delhi on Sunday. With the win, Spain whitewashed India 5-0 in the World Group Play-off of the Davis Cup after victories on Friday and Saturday.
Ferrer made a strong start to the game and got a healthy lead in the first set ,but unlike his previous outing against Saketh Myneni on Friday, the game was not as one-sided. Armed with a thumping backhand and a good volley, Ramanathan did make Ferrer sweat during a couple of rallies.
Uncharacteristically, Ferrer was making more unforced errors than his previous game. The World No.13 was still fierce with his serve but in the second set, Ramanathan yet again showed a lot of heart to push his opponent. Even at set point, Ferrer was made to earn the match but held on to win.
