A first-year student at Hyderabad Central University hanged himself in his hostel room early on Saturday. Gachi Bowli police station inspector N Ramesh said no suicide note has been found in N Praveen Kumar’s room in the L-Block of the campus, reported The Indian Express.

Later, the police recovered two notebooks, two mobile phones and a laptop that belonged to him. One of the notebooks revealed that Kumar was lonely. On September 9, he wrote, “Why am I unable to study well? Why am I so scared of everything? Why am I unable to mingle with anyone? Why am I always unhappy? Why do I have this feeling that I am a lonely person?’’ His family, however, reportedly had no clue. His brother N Naveen told The Indian Express that Kumar never discussed any problems with him and that they last spoke on Thursday evening.

Kumar’s body was recovered by his friends around 4 am on Saturday. Inspector Ramesh said, “His roommate said that Praveen was alone in the room as he had slept in his friend’s room last night. The reasons for his suicide are also not known yet.’’ He added that Kumar was a new student and that nobody knew him very well.

His body was immediately taken to the healthcare centre on campus. Chief Medical Officer Dr Ravindra Kumar told The Times of India, “Every possible treatment was given to bring him back to life. However, later we had to shift him to a private hospital for further treatment as we don't have higher level equipment such as a ventilator.’’ He was declared dead as soon as he was shifted to the private hospital.

A native of Shadnagar, about 50 km from Hyderabad, Kumar had enrolled for the Master of Fine Arts course about a month ago. The son of a Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited employee, Kumar reportedly came from a middle-class family. His suicide comes months after Rohith Vemula killed himself in a similar manner after alleged caste discrimination. Vemula’s suicide on January 17 triggered nationwide protests.
