The Bihar government on Friday filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking cancellation of former Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Mohammed Shahbuddin’s bail, reported ANI. Lawyer Prashant Bhushan also separately filed another public interest litigation against Shahabuddin’s release on behalf of Chandrashekhar Prasad whose three sons were allegedly killed by the former RJD legislator. The apex court will hear Bhushan’s plea on September 19.
Shahabuddin, who was sent to prison in November 2005 in connection with the murder of two brothers in his village, was granted bail by the Patna High Court on September 7 in connection with the murder of a prime witness in that case. After his release from Siwan Central Jail on September 10, Shahabuddin has been in the news.
He first sparked a row with his remark that Nitish Kumar was a “chief minister of circumstances”. Shahabuddin’s comment that Lalu Yadav was the one and only leader of Bihar also did not go down well with the Nitish Kumar-led coalition government. Shahabuddin was next seen with absconding sharpshooter Mohammad Kaif. The state government faced a lot of flak for not appealing against Shahabuddin’s bail.
In connection with the other PIL, Chandrashekar Prasad had alleged a threat to his life after Shahabuddin’s release. He told ANI that all he is seeking is government help.
