A man reportedly killed a 23-year-old old woman at her residence in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday, NDTV reported. The woman was alone at home when the accused, Jahir, entered her home through the back door and hacked her with a sickle. He then reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison.

The woman had just started work as an engineer and was engaged to be married, Hindustan Times reported. Her parents had also earlier declined Jahir's marriage proposal for their daughter. Police said the 27-year-old accused, a mill worker, is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit at a Palakkad hospital. Police said, "We've registered a case of murder. We have not arrested him yet as he's in the ICU."

This attack is the latest in a spate of incidents against women who have turned down such proposals. A 24-year-old teacher was killed inside a church in Tuticorin in August, and her attacker was found hanging at his home a few hours later. In June, another 24-year-old was hacked to death while she was waiting to board a train at Chennai's Nungambakkam Railway Station.
