The Indian Meteorological Department on Thursday said that the Southwest monsoon has started retreating from some parts of west Rajasthan like Anupgarh, Bikaner and Jaisalmer. The forecast is in line with the weather department’s earlier prediction, reported the Economic Times.
In its mid-day forecast, the Met department said, "In view of the changeover of the lower tropospheric circulation pattern from cyclonic to anticyclonic, reduction of humidity in the lower tropospheric levels and dry weather prevailing over west Rajasthan, the Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from some parts of west Rajasthan.” According to Skymet Weather, Rajasthan has witnessed a dry spell for the last two weeks, a primary criterion for retreating of monsoon.
The withdrawing of the Southwest monsoon usually brings heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. According to IMD, these regions will receive rain till September 18. Likewise, the weather department has issued "heavy to very heavy rain" warning for Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Mumbai, reported ANI. The Mumbai Police took to Twitter to warn people of high tide, keeping in mind Ganesh immersions. Police said that the water level will be 3.97 metres around 11 pm.
The Northeast and Konkan regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall between September 20 and September 22. However, states like Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are unlikely to get any rain during this period.
