Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia on Tuesday won India’s second gold medal at the Rio Paralympic games. Jhajharia ended the men’s F46 event with a throw of 63.97 metres, setting a new world record. The old record – 62.15 metres – was also set by Jhajharia, when he won gold at the 2004 Athen Paralympics. The F46 event was not held in the 2008 and 2012 games.
The athlete from Rajasthan is the current World No. 3. He became the first paralympian to win the Padma Shri in 2012 and had received the Arjuna Award in 2004 after his Athens feat. Other Indian javelin throwers in the fray were Rinku Hooda, who finished fifth, and Sundar Singh Gurjar, who did not throw at all.
India’s first gold medallist from this edition of the paralympics was Mariyappan Thangavelu, who won the men’s T42 high jump event. However, jhajharia is the only Indian paralympian to win two gold medals at the global event.
