Super typhoon Meranti, which is advancing at a speed of 295 kmph, is likely to hit Taiwan and mainland China on Wednesday, reported CNN. The hurricane is expected to bring torrential rain. So far, it is the strongest tropical cyclone of the year.
Though the velocity of Meranti may reduce to 240 kmph, it will still wreck havoc and is likely to trigger flash floods and mudslides. In the past 24 hours, Meranti has transformed from a Category 1 storm to a Category 5 hurricane.
The last time Taiwan faced such a deadly storm was in 2000 when Super Typhoon Bilis made landfall in the region. If Meranti passes over Taiwan, mainland China might feel the worst of the storm, reported Aljazeera. It will then hit the Chinese mainland as either a Category 2 or Category 3 storm. The coastline of Guangdong and Fujian are also at the risk of huge waves caused by Meranti.
