Former Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammad Shahabuddin was released on bail from a Bihar jail on Saturday, after nearly 11 years. The Siwan MP was sent to prison in November 2005 in connection with the murder of two brothers in his native village in the district. He was granted bail by the Patna High Court on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a prime witness in that case, The Indian Express reported.

“Everyone knows I was framed,” Shahabuddin told reporters after his release, according to ANI. He refuted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allegations that the RJD–Janata Dal (United) government in Bihar had ensured his release from the Bhagalpur Central Jail. “This has got nothing to do with politics. The judiciary has its own procedures,” he said.

Shahabuddin was arrested by a joint force of the Siwan Police and the Delhi Police for the killings of Girish Raj and Satish Raj on August 16, 2004. Their brother, prime witness Rajiv Raushan, was murdered on June 16, 2014, while the former legislator was in jail. While Shahabuddin’s son Osama was accused of Raushan’s murder, the jailed RJD politician was later charged as a conspirator in the case. He was sentenced to life for the murders of Girish and Satish in December 2015, but was granted bail by the Patna High Court in March this year.
