World No. 2 Andy Murray beat Spain’s Marcel Granollers on Thursday to book his place in the third round of the US Open. The Scotsman beat the Spaniard 6-4 6-1 6-4 and was in complete control of the match. Murray is gunning for his fourth major and second US Open title and is one of the best bets to bag the trophy.
Murray dominated Granollers and did not allow him to settle down during the entire course of the match. The second set was a Murray masterclass as he decimated the Spaniard 6-1 to literally kill the match and any hopes of a comeback from Granollers.
Wawrinka struggles, but comes through
Stanislas Wawrinka beat Italy’s Alessandro Giannessi 6-1 7-6(4) 7-5 in a match that saw the Swiss struggle in crucial moments. Wawrinka wasn’t at this best, but was never really threatened by his opponent during the match.
Nishikori fights on
Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 to progress to the next round. Nishikori won the first set with ease but lost the second owing to a drop in momentum. However, he was back on the track in the third and fourth to seal the match.
Serena ties with Navratilova
Serena Williams beat fellow American Vania King 6-3 6-3 to bag her 306th career win in a major, a record she now shares with the legendary Martina Navratilova. Williams was in sublime form as she went about doing what she does best.
Venus shows her class
Venus Williams beat Julia Goerges of Germany in straight sets to progress to the third round in the US Open. Venus beat the German 6-2 6-3 in match that saw her dominate in all aspects of the game.
Radwanska beats Broady
Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska beat Naomi Broady in straight sets to book her spot in the next round. The fourth seed saved four set points in the first set to win 7-6 (9) 6-3 to beat the Briton.
