The big news: Pakistan hit by Hales storm
Pakistan entered Trent Bridge already 2-0 down in the five-match One-Day International series. However, on Wednesday, they did not expect leaving the ground almost stunned by the way the England batsmen tore into their bowling. It was a massacre as England smashed 444 runs, their highest team total ever, in 50 overs for the loss of just three wickets.
It all began with Alex Hales hitting England’s highest individual score of 171 runs. He, along with Joe Root, demolished the Pakistani attack and were on course to set a huge target. Root then fell for 85 and it was up to Jos Buttler and captain Eoin Morgan to continue the demolition job that Hales and Root had begun.
Buttler was at his best, smashing seven sixes in his 51-ball 90 along with Morgan, who slammed 57 of 27 balls. Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz was their most expensive bowler and he returned with figures of 0/110 in his allotted 10 overs.
The Pakistani batsmen were never really in the run chase and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Chris Woakes spearheaded England’s bowling attack and bagged four wickets in six overs. It was a perfect day of cricket for England, who did no wrong and a day Pakistan would pay to forget.
