American tennis player Serena Williams has equalled the record for the most number of consecutive weeks spent as the world No. 1. Williams, 34, equalled the 186-week record set by German Steffi Graf from August 17, 1987 to March 10, 1991. Williams has been the world No. 1 women's singles player from February 18, 2013, when she displaced Victoria Azarenka at the top after beating Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Total Open. Williams is more than likely to beat Graf's record next week.
Williams is also gunning to one-up Graf in another world record at the ongoing US Open – the most number of majors won by a singles tennis player. Williams and Graf are currently tied at 22 each and the American can create history by winning the US Open.
