The West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution to rename the state "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi. It had earlier dropped "Bongo" as one of the proposed names for the state during discussions, reported ANI.
Earlier this month, the West Bengal Cabinet had decided to rename the state by dropping the word "West" so that it does not come last alphabetically among the others in the country, officials said. The ruling Trinamool Congress party in the state had wanted to rename West Bengal to "Paschimbanga" in 2011, "to raise the state’s position alphabetically". Besides TMC, Opposition parties led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had also supported the move then.
