Activist Trupti Desai on Sunday entered the sanctum sanctorum of Haji Ali Dargah and offered a 'chadar', PTI reported. This comes only two days after the Bombay High Court lifted a ban on women's entry into the inner sanctum of the dargah.
Desai said, "Last time, when we came here at Haji Ali Dargah, we prayed for the verdict of the high court on our side. Since our prayer was heard and fulfilled, we came here to seek the blessings of Haji Ali Baba and offered him a ‘chadar’." She asked the shrine authorities to refrain from challenging the court verdict in the Supreme Court. "If the trustees prefer to knock on the Supreme Court’s door, then nothing is going to change because the apex court too would uphold the constitutional right of the women and I am fully confident about it," she said.
According to the dargah trust, allowing women to visit the grave of a male saint is a grievous sin and not permitted by the Quran. Haji Ali Chairman Abdul Sattar Merchant said, "In Islam, women can't visit graveyards, this [inner sanctum] is also a grave, how can they go?"
