Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the creation of a "task force" that will set up a “comprehensive action plan” to help Indian athletes prepare for the next three editions of the Olympic Games, which will be held in 2020, 2024 and 2028. Modi, who made the announcement at a meeting of the Council of Ministers, said that the task force will be set up in the next few days.
A government statement said the action plan will dictate the overall strategy for infrastructure and procedural matters as well the training and selection of athletes for the games, according to PTI. It will comprise “members who are in-house experts as well as those from outside,” the statement added. However, media reports did not make clear to whom the task force will report.
The announcement comes after India won only two medals at the recently-concluded 2016 Summer Olympics at Rio. Wrestler Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze while badminton player PV Sindhu won a silver medal. The next edition of the games will be held in Tokyo.
