Delhi December 16 gangrape convict Vinay Sharma attempted suicide inside Tihar jail on Wednesday night, reported ANI. He has been admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where his condition is said to be stable.
According to PTI, Sharma allegedly took anti-depressant pills and then tried to hang himself from an iron grill of his cell using a piece of cloth around 9.30 pm. He was spotted by a Tamil Nadu special police personnel on duty. Jail officials said Sharma was suffering from depression and was on medication.
Last year, Sharma had demanded more security inside the jail after he alleged that he was being assaulted by other inmates. Sharma, along with convicts Mukesh, Pawan and Akshay Kumar Singh, had also approached the Supreme Court against the 2014 Delhi High Court order that upheld the death sentence awarded by the trial court, reported The Indian Express.
Six men, including a juvenile, were convicted of gangraping and killing a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. She died in a Singapore hospital on December 29. In March 2013, accused Ram Singh hanged himself inside Tihar jail. The juvenile convict was released last December after he served three years in a reformation home.
