In view of the improving situation in the Valley, authorities lifted the curfew from most parts of Srinagar, PTI reported. Normal life continued to be disrupted for the 46th day in the state owing to the curbs that followed when violence erupted after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
Five police station areas of downtown city, Batamaloo, Maisuma and Kralkhud in the uptown city, and Anantnag in south Kashmir continue to remain under curfew restrictions, an official said. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which restricts the gathering of four or more persons, continues to remain in force across the Valley. Leading the protests against the recent civilian killings, separatists have called for women in the valley to hold peaceful demonstrations.
Attendance in government offices and banks was affected in the region while shops, private offices, educational institutions and petrol pumps remained shut. Public transport facilities remained suspended. The outgoing prepaid cellphone facility remained barred, while mobile internet is yet to be restored in the Valley. At least 65 persons, including two police personnel, have lost their lives while thousands have been injured in the violence that followed Wani's encounter with security forces in Anantnag on July 8.
