The border districts of Gurdaspur and Pathankot are on high alert after security agencies intercepted a call from Pakistan on Friday that suggested there were suspects in the region. "...Callers were heard talking about movement of suspects in a truck to Pathankot or Dinanangar [in Gurdaspur]," police said, PTI reported.
Security was heightened in both districts, especially in the town of Batala, after the terror alert was sounded. Police, Indian Army jawaans and Border Security Force personnel are carrying out combing operations, officers added. "We are not taking any chances," said a police officer posted in Gurdaspur. All areas along the India-Pakistan border are on alert.
Around 400 security personnel, including Punjab Police, the Special Weapons and Tactics Team and BSF officers, conducted search operations after the phone call was intercepted. All vehicles heading to and coming from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are being checked, as well.
The Indian Air Force base in Pathankot was attacked on January 1-2. Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed militants are believed to be behind the attack, in which 13 people died.
