State governments and sporting associations around the country on Friday announced a series of cash prizes for badminton player PV Sindhu after she won the silver medal at the Olympics. The Telangana government announced an award of Rs 1 crore for the 21-year-old, and there were reports that it is considering offering her a plot of land in the state as well.

The president of the Hyderabad District Badminton Association V Chamundeshwarnath said he would raise funds to gift her a BMW car, a prize fellow shuttler Saina Nehwal had also received for her bronze medal at the 2012 London Games. The Badminton Association of India and the Madhya Pradesh government also announced cash prizes of Rs 50 lakh each for Sindhu, while the All India Football Federation will give Sindhu and bronze medal-winning wrestler Sakshi Malik Rs 5 lakh each.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was among the large number of dignitaries who hailed Sindhu for her feat. President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi had also sent her their wishes. Sindhu beat several higher-ranked players through the tournament to enter the finals, where she was beaten by World No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain.
