Paul Manafort, a veteran Republican adviser and consultant, on Friday quit as party nominee Donald Trump’s campaign chairman ahead of the United States presidential elections. He had joined the controversial business tycoon's team two months ago. While it is unclear why Manafort left the campaign, which has been reeling thanks to Trump’s irreverent rhetoric, he had been facing scrutiny for his links to Russia and his role in advising former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, the BBC reported.

Trump has reportedly not been happy with Manafort’s work, calling him “low energy” and reprimanding him for revealing the internal struggles of the campaign to a newspaper, the New York Times reported. The move comes at a time when Trump’s team has been facing internal overhauls and poor polling figures. Trump even uncharacteristically expressed regret on Thursday for sometimes saying “the wrong thing”.
